"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness And if we do act, in however small a way, we dont have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory". Howard ZinnWe live in turbulent times. When we started this documentary our goal was to raise questions about the nature of history through an exploration of Zinns life and writings. But, during the past five years world events have dictated the shape and content of our project toward new directions. You Cant Be Neutral on a Moving Train has evolved into a statement about the nature of war and a call for social activism expressed through the life of Howard Zinn. During this time, Zinn has re-emerged as an elder statesmen for the burgeoning youth movement. We have watched as he has been adopted by a new generation of activists, once again providing the intellectual and moral foundation to the argument for peace. This new generation of young people is idealistic and smart. They are drawn to Zinns unapologetic articulation of the contradictions in our current society and historical past. As literally thousands come to hear him speak, we are reminded of the uniqueness of this man and his willingness to challenge conventional wisdom. Five years ago, we knew we would have an audience for You Cant Be Neutral on a Moving Train, but quite honestly we never knew how timely the film would eventually become. Today, Zinn speaks about war from the vantage point of view of one who has seen wars, and has taken part in war and its horrific consequences. In an age when politicians cry of necessity of war, Zinn challenges the moral bankruptcy of their pleas. This is why a documentary about Zinn and his ideas is so important today. You Cant Be Neutral on a Moving Train is a story about the possibility of hope in an age seemingly gone mad. You Cant Be Neutral on a Moving Train is a passionate testament to optimism, the belief that together we can change the world for the better. The documentary is currently in post-production and has an anticipated completion date of Spring '03. Thank you to everyone who joined us for fundraising events this year. Your support is invaluable.
